Marley. Marsy. Mars.
We'll remember the flecks of white on your paws and on your sweet face, and how much hair would come off on our own hands when we would sink our fingers into your fur.
We'll remember the way you'd gently lay your head on our laps, and give us a tap with your paw when we'd stop petting you. The sound you'd make when we'd rub your ears just right.
We'll remember the thud of your tail against the kitchen island when you'd get excited to see us come home - whether we were gone for 5 hours or 5 minutes. The thuds were even louder when we had a dog timbit in our hands.
We'll remember the way your caramel coloured eyes sparkled in the sunlight - your favourite place to lay on the hottest of days.
We'll remember your beautiful grey beard, and everything that got stuck in it, from snow to rice dinners and everything in between.
We'll remember the quick pitter patter of your feet on the kitchen floor as you heard the drawer for the carrots open, or the sound of saran wrap being taken off a block of cheese.
We'll remember the way you'd close your eyes and let your ears flap in the wind as you'd hang your head out the window during car rides.
We'll remember you as the fun police around the pool, barking at anyone who ran and jumped in the water.
We'll remember how you'd wait by the door to go upstairs late at night, so excited to get into bed but didn't want to go up without us.
We'll remember reaching our hands down in the middle of the night to give you a quick pet if you were having a bad dream, and tripping over you in the dark during late night trips to the bathroom.
We'll remember your random bursts of energy as you'd vigorously shake your lamb chop, snowman, or Stanley as hard as you could.
We love your patience with Maisy as she learned how to be gentle, and took her time deciding which parts of her meals she wanted to share with you. Thank you for letting her give you hugs, use you as a car garage, and for being her first best friend.
We love the way you'd back up to us for butt scratches, dance when we hit the spot just right, and flip your head around to look at us if we stopped.
We love you so much. We will forever be listening for your sounds, as though you're right by our side like you always were - our velcro pup. We still look for you in your favourite places - beside the bed, behind the couch, at mom's feet in the office, laying in the sunniest, hottest spot on the deck, hanging out in the evergreen bush by the pool, or running around in Sebringville with Ginger and Avery chasing squirrels or boxing with Diesel.
To love a dog like you makes our hearts bigger. We have more capacity to love, not only you, but everyone. Loving you gave us a whole lifetime's worth of joy packed into 15 years. In such a short time, you gracefully showed us all how to live a good life, how to love, and in the end, how lucky we are to have someone in our lives that makes saying goodbye so hard.
We love you and miss you every day.
