Our Girl Sloane
AKA, Sloaney Baloney. Sloaney Pants. Sloaney World. POOF/Poofy/Poofer. Sloaneykins. Babykins. Kins. Babyness. Muffin Man. Kidney Bean. Pumpkin Pie. Muppet. Best dog of the world.....
We were so lucky to have had Sloane be a part of our lives. What an incredibly special girl. After going through a few homes that didn’t want her (we couldn’t see why), she came to us at around 8 months. She took a while to truly come out of her shell and believe we were her forever home, but once she did she showed such emotion and character. What a goofball. She knew how to make a person laugh. Whether it was ruffling blankets and towels while doing the moonwalk, laying upside wiggling her bum (she loved getting her bum bounced to “whose bum is this”), giving silly “Spike” hugs or just her contagious smile, she could get you to laugh even in the worst of moods.
Sloane had a huge heart. She gave kisses, but she loved to give hugs between our knees and was the nurse of the house when someone (including animals) wasn't feeling well. She was also the security dog of the house, making sure the cats didn’t bug each other by escorting them around (she loved the cats so much!). She had a “sister” for most of her life, Kylie, that she spent a lot of time with sleeping and playing together, until Kylie passed away in 2021. Sloane didn’t get the point of fetch when she first came to us, and it was Kylie who taught her just how much fun it could be. She’d eventually play fetch for hours especially at the cottage, with her beloved half flat “Wilson” balls. It was the first thing she’d look for when arriving at the cottage.
In 2022 Sloane helped raise Maisie who is now 1. Even though she was 13 she still enjoyed small plays nearly daily with the youngster. She loved all of her people. She loved visits, especially from Grandparents, and was thrilled when Hanna (now 4) and Brooks (now 22 months) joined the family. She loved the cottage - enjoying playing with Wilson, swimming or wading in the water, towel times, going on adventure walks and bike rides, boat rides, chasing squirrels and just sleeping in the dirt or on the dock. Sloane would even sometimes just stare over the lake sniffing the air. When we were in the forest she was back on security, always somewhere with a good vantage point keeping an eye on things. There’s a hill that you can see our whole forest from that we call Sloaney’s hill/lookout, as it was her favourite view and she loved digging and rolling down the hill on her back. She also loved her green chair at the cottage, spending indoor hours sleeping on it or at our feet. She even enjoyed the 5 hour drives there and back often having great looking naps enjoying the breeze and sun or sticking her head out the window. The last 15 minutes there she’d sit up the whole time in anticipation.
Sloane was always there for us during challenging times and it will be hard going through things now without her. She taught us that even in bad times there’s room for a giggle or two, and that there’s light amongst the darkness, including within yourself. She had her own challenges, being a tough, brave girl. I called her my “miracle dog” as she went through several medical issues, always showing resilience to overcome and an instinct to being lighthearted and keeping those around her uplifted. She was very unselfish.
Sloane always astounded people the way she would listen and tilt her head. Half of the time you could swear she understood what was being said, if not by words, then by reading your mind. She could also communicate to us with her laser-focused stare whether it be for treats, to go outside or play etc. She definitely had a gift for communication and a desire to be connected to others on a deep level.
We are ever going to miss her easy going, loving presence, all the plays, jumping, hugs and smiles.. everything she was. Such a loyal, loving, caring, funny, goofy and very wise dog.
Sloane will be dearly missed by Natalie, Jackie, Sydney and family.
Along with the many friends, neighbours near and far who always enjoyed their time with sweet Sloane.
